How does Stevenson present conflict between good and evil in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde? Essay
Robert Louis Stevenson was born November 13,1850, in Edinburgh, Scotland. He had heath problems. Stevenson attended Edinburgh university as a science student, because his parents wanted him to be a Civil engineer. However, Robert had other plans. He wanted to become a writer. This made his parent upset. In the late 19th century, Robert Louis Stevenson wrote the novella ââ¬Å"Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.â⬠The title of the book could mean ââ¬Å"Jeâ⬠which in French means ââ¬Å"Iâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Kyllâ⬠which could also be written as ââ¬Å"killâ⬠. The title meaning is ââ¬Å"I kill and hideâ⬠, this novella has a powerful title and it relates much about the novella. This is because when Jekyll turns into Hyde he has the chance to express the bad side of himself. Forexample when Hyde kills Sir Danvers Carew. In the book Sir Danvers was killed for no reason. This means that when Jekyll turns into Hyde he is expressing his bad side. The novella was set in the Victorian London. In that time people were divided into class(upper and lower class). However, they also had the hypocritical believe, this means that they strongly believe in God. For that reason when Jekyll turned into Hyde it meant that Jekyll was playing with Godââ¬â¢s creation. In the novella, Stevenson present the conflict between good and Evil in many different ways. He relates the book to him self as he claims â⬠Jekyll had more than a fatherââ¬â¢s interest; Hyde had more than a sonââ¬â¢s indifferenceâ⬠, this quote means that Jekyll cared much about things but Hyde however lack interest and care. This quote relates to the conflict that happened between him and his dad. The novella has numerous of narratives to build up suspense. Stevenson uses, elaborate description, dialogue, multiple narrators and the novella starts with third personââ¬â¢s narrator, who is Utterson. In the last two chapters however, which are Lanyon and Jekyllââ¬â¢s reports their experience from their own point of view. The narrator knows most things before we do. We know this when it states ââ¬Å"a year laterâ⬠at the start of a chapter, this quote shows that we donââ¬â¢t know what happened and it jumps a whole year of information. Meaning that it gives us very little information. It build suspense, and creates a gothic atmosphere. The novella follows Uttersonââ¬â¢s point of view; this make the book more interesting. He makes the novella interesting because all the event that he faces that is the novella, that is the event we face as well. It also builds and mystery and leads us to wrong conclusion, and delays our understanding. Utterson is also the character in the novella with the ego, because he always tries to understand Jekyllââ¬â¢s behaviour. Jekyll thinks that everyone has two sides, which are the good and the evil. Therefore he tries to play God by wanting to separate the two from each other. As a doctor every one expect you to be a good person. However, Dr. Jekyll wanted to experience the bad side of himself. When Jekyll says ââ¬Å"though so profound a double-dealerâ⬠, this quote confess to us that he was a ââ¬Å"double-dealerâ⬠meaning that he was Hyde. This also shows that Jekyll wears a mask. Stevenson uses the weather as a symbol to represent the atmosphere in the book, ââ¬Å"a fog rolled over the cityâ⬠. the quote uses the word ââ¬Å"fogâ⬠, this shows that the city is hiding things and it is very secretive because it is very difficult to see through fog, which is the clouds of the truth. As readers when we read this we get the impression that the city has a lot of unravelled secrets. Louis also uses windows and doors to represent a persons character, ââ¬Å"a blind forehead of discoloured wall on the upperâ⬠, the quote suggest that Hydeââ¬â¢s house was not well looked after. It continues with ââ¬Å"blistered and distainedâ⬠, this reflects on the windows, that they are not cleaned. This reflect to Hydeââ¬â¢s character as he was not a clean person and did things that are not clean. This quote also reflect back to the Victorian, as they use to judge people by their outer appearance. This meant that if you were an ugly person you were evil. We experience this when Utterson first saw Hyde and when he said he was â⬠so ugly that it brought out the sweat on me like running.â⬠, This quote admit to us readers that Hyde was a very ugly person. The quote also uses the word ââ¬Å"runningâ⬠, this word is very strong in the quote because it is the word that exaggerates how ugly Hyde was. In addition he did not just wanted to run away from Hyde because he was ugly but because of his believe Hyde was evil too. As readers when we read this it makes us think back to the title of the novella, ââ¬Å"Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hydeâ⬠, a Doctor is seems to be a nice and innocent person; on the other hand, Mr. Hyde is a person that according to his name is someone who hides, he someone who does not want to bee seen. In the novella Hyde enters the house from the back door to Jekyll house, and Jekyll enters the house from the front door, ââ¬Å"two doors from one cornerâ⬠, this quote shows that if people looked at Jekyllââ¬â¢s house it is just one house but it has two doors. As a reader when we read this it leaves us in confusion, because we donââ¬â¢t know that if Jekyllââ¬â¢s house was made like how it is because he always had in mind that he was going to separate the god from evil. â⬠The door, which was equipped with neither bell nor knockerâ⬠, this quote describe Hydeââ¬â¢s personality because he does not want to be seen so his door was not equipped. In addition this could mean that the back door which lead to the lab could represent hell and the front door which lead to the quite part of the house could represent heaven. This is because in hell that is where bad things happens and Hydeââ¬â¢s entrance to the house is the lab that is where Jekyll makes the dose for himself to turn to Hyde, who is the evil side of Jekyll. Nevertheless, when Jekyll enters the house it is the normal and peaceful entrance of the house. Jekyll has an addiction to Hyde, ââ¬Å"my devil had long being caged, he came out roaringâ⬠, this quote suggest Jekyllââ¬â¢s addiction to Hyde. When the quote states ââ¬Å"he came out roaringâ⬠, this part of the quote uses anima imagery and it also relates to people who take drugs, alcohol, cigarettes when they take all these stuff his body ask for more and more just like Jekyllââ¬â¢s body ask for more. The weather, most of the times sets the mood in the book, when Hyde became a murderer, Stevenson used the moon along with clouds to represent the atmosphere, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦was brilliantly lit by the full moonâ⬠, this quote reflect to the genre of the book which is gothic horror. This is because when you what watch horror movies it has full moonââ¬â¢s most of the times. At the end of the novella when Jekyll makes his statement, he confess about the idea of him playing the role of God, by separating the good form the evil. When Jekyll first turns into Hyde he feels happy and enjoys the feeling we now this when he says ââ¬Å"at the first breath of this new life, to be more wicked, tenfold more wickedâ⬠, this quote shows that Jekyll enjoyed the feeling and the thinks he did when he was ââ¬Å"on drugsâ⬠. The quote also suggest that it was Jekyllââ¬â¢s intention to turn into Hyde. The book is still relevant today as many doctors and scientist are trying to play God. They do this with GM foods, cloning, steam cells and embryos. Personally as a reader I think that Jekyll had no right to play God especially in his time when people where very religious. If Jekyll really wanted to show people that he had two sides he should have just shown it , instead of transforming himself into a different character. This also shows that Jekyll had a strong felling about how people thought about him as a Doctor. Since no one is perfect Jekyll should have act as a normal human like anyone else and shown his bad side when he needed to.

Philosophies of Religion Essay
This Essay portrays the basic philosophies of religion particularly Christianity. This will be helpful for Christians to refresh or enhance their faith or take the challenge in strengthening their beliefs. Among the important and basic Christian philosophies to be discussed include; the true religion, real and false churches, minds and soul, heaven and heal, life after death, love and forgiveness, perfect marriage, miracles, Trinity, the challenging questions about the Da Vinci Code, Christians and Muslims, perfect marriage, etc. The discussions presented in this article are focused on indepth reflections of my previous work entitled, Echoes of Heaven: Godââ¬â¢s Love is Better than Life Itself. This further simplify the understanding of mysterious things concerning Christian faith and the challenges that shaken or strengthen the beliefs of a Christian. Introduction Many people (Christians and non-Christians) are in a great religious confusion with tough questions about faith, life, death and many other challenging concerns that will most likely affect the faith or belief of the people. Most are searching for answers through reading literatures, the holy bible or the Koran, discussions with peers, religious institutions, and even through prayers. This essay will attempt to offer explanations of the many questions that challenge the beliefs of Christians and non-Christians. Some inputs of this essay are generated from my article, ââ¬Å"Echoes of Heaven: Godââ¬â¢s Love is Better than Life Itselfâ⬠that aim to enhance manââ¬â¢s relation with God. What is Soul? Soul is the energy that God places within a human body so it would receive life. It is in the form of spirit which is invisible to human eyes. It does not reside in one part of the body but keeps on moving throughout the blood. It can leave the body, go to another place or world, and come back into it as long as it remains connected. It happens so fast because it can move at the speed of light. It has the ability to travel into the future and tell how the future will be, that is a vision. Soul gives light and lives in the body and also prevents the body from decaying, and once the soul is unconscious or leaves the body, the body has no life, and therefore it starts decaying. The soul is the bodyââ¬â¢s life giving spiritual thing which is separate and distinct from the body. They are inseparable in any way when the body is conscious, but the soul could be away from the body when the latter is unconscious. How do minds and soul communicate? Soul has no language barriers. There is only one language understood by all souls, or perhaps the soul has the ability to understand all languages. It has unlimited power and the ability to perform anything. When God created man, He granted this power and authority where the soul operates in human flesh in which the latter is ruled by a human mind. Human minds are limited in terms of power, their ability to perform, language, and mobility, among other things. Mindââ¬â¢s desire is for material or physical things while the soul desires for the things that are spiritual. The soul has the ability to see beyond what the naked eye cannot see and has the ability to gather information from different places in an instant. It is stated that even the absence of language, the soul still communicate with mind in harmony. Soul is therefore, considered as master over mind. A gap is identified between the human level and the spiritual level where either the spirit of God resides or the spirit of the Devil. The soul provides information to the mind. The spirit of God empowers the soul to act at its fullness, but the evil spirit empowers the mind or the flesh. The mind has the ability to process and store information or idea communicated from the soul which can be destructive or creative, depending on its source. What is a true religion? A true religion is the one that follow Godââ¬â¢s guidance by building a good relationship with God. God is interested in having a good relationship with people; this is the true religion, knowing what God wants and knowing that we are doing what pleases Him. Likewise, the ISLAM HERALD (2003) stated that a true religion is teaching true concepts like the existence of God, that He is powerful and loving, He is aware of us and wishes to help us, and that certain things are required of us in return. It is therefore imperative that everyone should think that religion is just a vehicle to let people know that there is God and that He wants all the people to follow what He wants. Hence, the issue on true religion should not be argued. People who argue and claim that their religion is the true religion are those who did not follow what God wants them to do, hence, they are fools influenced by the thoughts of the devil. What is death, and how do people feel when dying? Death is the state when the soul has completely left the body and has no connection, or the soul is still in the body but unconscious. When a person meets an accident, the flesh may completely fail to function but the soul is fully conscious, preoccupied with many things, without expecting in meeting death. In this situation, the death of accident victim is declared but remains fully conscious within the body in which souls are looking for mercy, and they can talk. However, after some days, the soul gives up and became unconscious because they can no longer gain strength. What happens when one dies? When some people die, their souls remain unconscious within their bodies; others get out of their body and begin roaming around while the holy ones go to paradise, led by angels. The death of the holy ones will open the gate to a bright world where the angels are waiting to take them home (paradise), but those who remain in the grave are surrounded by darkness; they are not warm or cold. The latterââ¬â¢s case will be determined during the Day of Judgment. The rebellious ones still go on roaming the world and their souls are fully dedicated to the Devil. Are heaven and hell real? The Holy Bible tells everyone that there is heaven and hell. This contention can be read in some passages of the Bible, and among them are the book of Revelation and the gospel of Mathew which can be read below. Heaven Revelation 21:1-4 reads: ââ¬Å"Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, ââ¬ËBehold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. Hell Jesus used different images to describe hell. He used the images of torment (Matthew 25:46), a place of weeping and gnashing of teeth (Matthew 8:12), a place of outer darkness (Matthew 8:12), and a place of fire (Matthew 3:12). Revelation 21:8 describes it as ââ¬Å"the lake which burns with fire and brimstoneâ⬠¦ â⬠To demonstrate that hell is a place of continual and eternal torment, Revelation 14:11 states that ââ¬Å"the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worships the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name. This is the biblical teaching on hell. Those who try to dilute it are only hurting people; hell is real, and everyone who does not submit to the gospel of Christ will go there. However, Rev. Douglas Taylor of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Binghamton, argue that Hell, like Heaven, is essentially a state of mind although the very opposite state of mind to heaven. If hell is within us, it will be seen outside of us as a place ( a hideous place), reflecting the hideousness of the evil withinâ⬠. Is there life after death? Yes, there is life after death. This is supported by the Bibleââ¬â¢s passage particularly in John 11:25-26 where God said ââ¬Å"There is only one way ââ¬â through faith and trust in Godââ¬â¢s Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus said, ââ¬Å"I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die like everyone else, will live again. They are given eternal life for believing in me and will never perish. Furthermore, this can also be read in the book of Mathew 25:46 which states that ââ¬Å"Those who have been made righteous will go into eternal life in heaven, but unbelievers will be sent to eternal punishment or hellâ⬠. Who is right, Christians or Muslims? Christians and Muslims believe in the same God, and their faith is based on the Old Testament. These believers are both believe in the Day of Judgment and the coming of Jesus Christ for the second time. Many are amazed that the Koran talked more about Mary, the mother of Jesus, in regards to the birth of Christ than the Bible itself. Both groups of believers believe in the living God, the Most High King, and the God of the universe. At that high level, both groups have no difference. Those who called by His name are given the power and authority to rule and judge the world. God was just using different messengers for the Christians and the Muslims; Christ Jesus for the Christians, and Mohammad for the Muslims. But, they the same believed the old testament of the Holy Bible. In the eyes of God, the righteous are those who believe that there is God; obey His commands, and those who recognize that He is the most powerful and merciful God. What is a perfect marriage? A perfect marriage is a marriage that put God in the center. A perfect marriage is bound with open communication, faith and trust with each other. In Ephesians 5:23-33 of the Holy Bible, God describes that perfect marriage is based on love. He commands the husband to love his wife more than he loves himself, and to nourish and cherish her. A man should provide for his wifeââ¬â¢s needs and consider her a precious possession. The most important part of a good marriage is LOVE, not just a physical attraction, but true love and concern for each other before God. Marriages that last are built on love (Ecclesiastes 9:9). The wise man Solomon said that enjoying lifeââ¬â¢s blessings with a loving companion is a great reward. Loveââ¬â¢s endurance knows no limits, its trust no end, its hope no fading; it can outlast anything. If, we will but follow Godââ¬â¢s pattern for the marriage relationship, we can find the happiness that God intended when He ordained it. The pleasure and happiness are there when the husband and the wife have the proper love for each other and for God. These explanations about perfect marriage are anchored on LOVE. What is the secret behind miracles? The secret behind miracles is faith. Many scriptures in the Holy Bible (in the New Testament) tell how Jesus shown that faith makes miracles. However, in some cases, miracles are used by the devil to mislead the people of God and forget the true miracle from God which is the miracle of forgiveness of sins. Do all miracles come from God? Not all miracles come from God. Dan Corner of Evangelical Outreach reveals that miracles come from two sources that is God and devil. The book of Exodus that ââ¬Å"some of Godââ¬â¢s miracles were duplicated by Satanââ¬â¢s power channeled through the Egyptian magicians: a wooden staff became a snakeâ⬠(7:10, 11); ââ¬Å"water was changed into bloodâ⬠(7:20-22)â⬠and frogs came out of the water and covered the landâ⬠(8:6, 7)! â⬠Demons can and do perform miraculous signsâ⬠(Rev. 16:14, p. 142). In the Holy Bible (New Testament) Jesus Christ made many miracles of healing the sick people, giving life again to the declared dead person, calming storms, etc. All the miracles performed by Jesus came from God. Are all churches real? Not all churches are real. Elephant shared in his article that the real churches are those where the worshippers are singing with the same voice, moving in the same direction, without confusion, and seek God for salvation. Real churches are those with true worshippers. True worshippers of God are poor in hearts seeking God and left everything behind just to follow God with one purpose, salvation. Is there any false church or prophet? There are so many false churches and prophets even during the time of Jesus Christ. False church is look like a market place where there are lots of confusions; people are seeking God for material things not salvation. Yes, there were false prophets as supported by Ezekiel 13, even God warn the people against false prophets and said to Ezekiel ââ¬Å"These foolish prophets are doomed! They provide their own inspiration and invent their own visions. Christians of today, your prophets are as useless as foxes living among the ruins of the city. They do not guard the places where the walls have crumbled, nor do they build the walls, and so the churches cannot be defended when war comes on the day of the Lord. Their visions are false, and their predictions are lies. They claim that they are speaking my message, but I have not sent them. Yet they expect their words to come true! I tell them: Those visions you see are false, and the predictions you make are lies. You say that they are my words, but I have not spoken to youâ⬠. Jeremiah was told by God to ââ¬Å"Tell my people not to listen to what those false prophets say; they are filling you with false hopes. They tell you what they have imagined and not what I have said. To the people who refuse to listen to what I have said, they keep saying that all will go well with them. And they tell everyone who is stubborn that disaster will never touch him. â⬠Is man a complicated creature? Why and why not? Man is a complicated creature because God has provided them everything, the life, the trees that produces foods they need. In Genesis 2:15-16, God even give man a companion in the presence of Eve. With a condition that he should not eat the fruit of the tree that gives knowledge of what is good and bad because the punishment of death will be accorded to him by God. Manââ¬â¢s complication started when he disobey God. The complication continue when God give different languages to human beings and scattered them all over the world. It is hard to understand man because something else that God had no intention to create was created after eating the fruit of the tree that gives knowledge of what is good and what is bad. Man became a complicated creature and that is why we suffer, because we need to prove to God that we can be faithful and trusted once more. Our first parent chose to follow or listen to a stranger, the devil. He ignored the instruction of God, despite or everything provided to him by God.

Character study of Rosalind from As You Like It Essay Example for Free
Character study of Rosalind from As You Like It Essay Rosalind, throughout William Shakespeareââ¬â¢s As You Like It, uses her ability to control language to attain her goals. Using creative speech, Rosalind enables herself to control and manipulate every situation that she is involved with, especially those concerning Orlando and Phoebe. Rosalind dominates many scenes in As You Like It and, ultimately, everything that Rosalind wants to occur does. She even changes her identity to do so. By using ingenious language, Rosalind facilitates the accomplishment of all of her objectives throughout the play. The first situation in which Rosalind displays her dominance in language is in the Forest of Ardenne, disguised as Ganymede, a male. She, knowing that Orlando is yearning for her love, comments on his obvious unrequited love, saying, ââ¬Å"Then there is no true lover in the forest; else sighing every minute and groaning every hour would detect the lazy for of time as well as a clock.â⬠(111) By implying that Orlandoââ¬â¢s love is not true love, she immediately inspires Orlando to prove her wrong. Orlando, becoming a little suspicious, inquires why her accent is not rough as a result of her living in the secluded forest her entire life. She retorts almost immediately with an elaborate story in which she states, ââ¬Å"But indeed and old religious uncle of mine taught me to speak, who was in his youth an inland man, one that knew courtship too well, for there he fell in love. I have heard him read many lectures against it.â⬠Although a lie, Rosalind uses this sly and dece ptive speech to give herself the excuse to sound educated and the ability to discuss love. Rosalind sets up this situation from the beginning, enabling herself to discreetly mention true love in order to get Orlandoââ¬â¢s full attention. Rosalind goes on to obtain Orlandoââ¬â¢s undivided attention by saying, ââ¬Å"There is a man that haunts the forest that abuses our young plants with carving ââ¬ËRosalindââ¬â¢ on their barks, hands odes upon hjawthrons and elegies on brambles, all, forsooth, the name of Rosalind. If I could meet that fancy-monger, I would give him some good counsel, for he seems to have the quotidian of love upon him.â⬠(113). Rosalind proclaims herself as an expert of love in order to give herself an excuse to meet with Orlando and help him cope with his situation She knows Orlando will surely agree to meet with her to discuss his love. He says that he is truly in love, but Rosalind states that ââ¬Å"there is none of my uncleââ¬â¢s marks upon you. He taught me how to know a man in love.â⬠Orlando retorts, ââ¬Å"I would I could make thee believe I love.â⬠By implying that Orlando may not even be in love at all, and promoting herself as an expert, she is enabling herself to ââ¬Å"counselâ⬠Orlando. She leads Orlando to want to prove he is in love with Rosalind. The major fact that she is interested in is observing how deeply Orlando is in love with her and how desperate he is to be with her. By leading Orlando on to believe that she is an expert when it comes to matters that concern true love, Rosalind allows herself to find out what Orlando is thinking about her from a third person, and unbiased, perspective. Rosalind also creatively uses language to manipulate situations that contain Phoebe, Silvius, and her own disguised character, Ganymede. Although Silvius deeply loves Phoebe, she continues to reject his brutally. However, Ganymede gets involved to defend Silvius, saying to Phoebe, ââ¬Å"Who might be your mother, that you insult, exult and all at once over the wretched? What though you have no beauty-as, by my faith, I see no more in you than without candle may go dark to bed-must you be therefore proud and pitiless?â⬠(131). Ganymede goes onto criticizes Phoebe even more by saying, ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËTis not your inky brows, you black silk hair, your bugle eyeballs, nor your cheek of cream that can entame my spirits to your worship.â⬠However, instead of getting Phoebe to realize she should appreciate Silviusââ¬â¢ love, Ganymede unintentionally obtains Phoebeââ¬â¢s love. Phoebe states to Ganymede, ââ¬Å"Sweet youthm I pray you chide a year together. I had rather hear you chide than this man [Silvius] woo.â⬠133. Phoebe becomes attracted to Ganymede not realizing that Ganymede is really Rosalind, a woman. Rosalind, realizing this, continues to insult and criticizes Phoebe. She knows that she can eventually trick Phoebe into loving Silvius. Seeing an opportunity, Ganymede continues to insult Phoebe in order to continue to attain her love. Also, Rosalind sees that Silviusââ¬â¢ love for Phoebe is deep and true, despite that Phoebe rejects and ignores him. She sees the opportunity to manipulate Phoebe into loving Silvuis. As a result, she continues to lead Phoebe on, preparing for the time in which she ahs the chance cajole her to love Silvius. Rosalind uses her creative language one final time in dealing with the weddings. She is able, through the use of witty language, to arrange each marriage, and those who are involved, to her liking. Orlando reveals to Ganymede that he ââ¬Å"can no longer love by thinking,â⬠and now, more than ever, needs to be with Rosalind. Ganymede then responds by saying, ââ¬Å"I have since I was three year old, conversed with a magician most profound in his art and yet not damnable. If you do love Rosalind so near the heart as your gesture cries out, when your brother marries Aliena shall you marry herâ⬠By assuring Orlando that Rosalind would marry him the next day, Ganymede then proceeds with the second part of her plan. She realizes that Phoebe has an attraction towards her as Ganymede She uses this fact to persuade Phoebe to marry her, with one stipulation. If Phoebe for some reason decides that she does not want to marry Ganymede, Phoebe would then be obligated to marry Silvius. Ganymede obtains Phoebeââ¬â¢s agreement on their marriage, stating, ââ¬Å"If you do refuse to marry me, Youââ¬â¢ll give yourself to this most faithful shepherd [Silvius].â⬠Ganymede goes on to state: [To Silvius] I will help you if I can. [To Phoebe] I would love you if I could-Tomorrow meet me all together. I will marry you if I ever marry a woman, and Iââ¬â¢ll be married tomorrow. [To Orlando] I will satify you and you shall be married tomorrow. Eventually, Ganymede reveals herself as Rosalind, and, accompanied by Hymen, prepares to marry Orlando. Aliena reveals herself to be Celia and weds Oliver. Phoebe, realzing that her lover, Ganymede, is really a female, then agrees to wed Silvius as a part of he pact with Rosalind. Postmodernism - The War on Terror Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Postmodernism - The War on Terror - Essay Example The paper "Postmodernism - The War on Terror" discusses how media influences on society in the era of postmodernism. The media has presented the Iraq war in a very different way in America, as compared to the way in which it is viewed over the rest of the world. Dissenting opinions offered against the Iraq war were presented sparingly in the media during the initial stages of the war, since it became ââ¬Å"unpatrioticâ⬠to discuss the negative aspects of the war. Support for the war has been largely garnered through the kind of images presented in the media, which have capitalized on the fear generated after the 9/11 attacks to capture public support for the war in Iraq. The ââ¬Å"war on terrorâ⬠has been touted in the media as the war against terrorism and has successfully created a culture of fear in America. It has successfully linked the traumatic events of 9/11 and the terrorist attack on the world trade center with the war in Iraq. The image of a nation at war was a lso responsible for the re-election of President Bush, since a Commander in chief is not changed midstream. The slogan of the war on terror has created an all-pervasive culture of fear, which in turn has intensified the emotions of the public and has made it easier to mobilize support within the United States. Repeated portrayal of images in the media of the crashing of the terrorist airplanes flying into the World Trade Center and the mayhem and destruction that resulted were instrumental in hyping up the fear against terrorists in the minds of public.

AL 3 CRJ 520II Response Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
AL 3 CRJ 520II Response - Essay Example Current research suggests drug court programs and juvenile programs, which include therapeutic, educational, and family components, appear to be effective in recidivism reduction (Drake & Miller, 2009). According to research, cognitive-behavioral programs often lead to positive outcomes. These positive outcomes are expected to result in a 6.9% recidivism reduction (Drake & Miller, 2009). With regards to high risk offenders, Lipsey and Landenberger (2005) found smaller sample size, attendance monitoring, intervention adherence, and mental health professionals characterized the research and demonstration programs. Positive outcomes were reported. Researchers further suggest positive outcomes are depended upon the quality of the cognitive-behavioral program provided. Perhaps implementing adult treatment programs that resemble juvenile treatment programs will prove to be effective. First, I would receive feedback from citizens in my home state in order to get a general consensus. I would hold a town hall/community meeting in large/key jurisdictions. I would invite key players to speak including county jail and state prison officials, individuals who specialize in offender treatment programs, probation officers, correctional officers, a budget analyst, and a few rehabilitated inmates who have benefited from treatment during and after confinement. In addition, I would also invite family members of inmates to speak regarding the effectiveness of rehabilitation. Of course this seems a bit over board, but we are discussing an issue that affects everyone in the state. My speech: We are all aware that crime rates fluctuate. Some research and statistical data contend crime rates have dropped. Yet some research and statistical data contend crime rates have increased. In addition, throughout this country including this state, we have witnessed an increase in incarceration rates, without any plausible
